PM launches Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana[11/10/2014]

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today launched the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, calling it a scheme that would open the door for good politics, and inviting all MPs to select a village to develop on a demand-driven, rather than a supply-driven model, with people's participation. The Prime Minister said that development in villages was often supply-oriented. The Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, would however have three distinct features - it would be (a) demand driven (b) inspired by society (c) based on people's participation.

Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana[21/11/2014]

The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the launch of Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) with components (i) to separate agriculture and non agriculture feeders facilitating judicious rostering of supply to agricultural and non-agricultural consumers in rural areas and (ii) strengthening and augmentation of sub transmission and distribution infrastructure in rural areas, including metering of distribution transformers/feeders/consumers. The estimated cost of the scheme for above two components is Rs.43,033 crore which includes the requirement of budgetary support of Rs.33,453 crore from Government of India over the entire implementation period.

US and China announce historic climate accord[14/11/2014]

India slips to 71st rank in global competitiveness list[03/09/2014]

India has slipped to 71st position -- the lowest among BRICS countries - in an annual global competitiveness list, where Switzerland remains on top. The annual list, released today by Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF), comes at a time when the new Indian government has completed 100 days in power and has promised further steps to revive its economy and the ease of doing business in the country.

As per the Global Competitiveness Report 2014-15, Switzerland is the most competitive economy, followed by Singapore and United States. Other countries in the top ten are Finland (4), Germany (5), Japan (6), Hong Kong SAR (7), Netherlands (8), United Kingdom (9) and Sweden (10).

China, which has improved its position by one place to 28th spot, leads the BRICS grouping, among which India has the least ranking. Russia is ranked at 53rd position, followed by South Africa (56) and Brazil (57), India's decline of 11 places to 71st.

Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Abhiraj Commissioned[02/09/2014]

The Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Abhiraj, the fourth in the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, was commissioned on 02 Sep 2014 at Tuticorin by Vice Adm SPS Cheema Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command in the presence of Inspector General SP Sharma Commander Coast Guard Region (East).

The 50 meter indigenous FPV displaces 290 tonnes and can achieve a maximum speed of 33 knots with an endurance of 1500 nautical miles at an economical speed of 13 knots. The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipment. The ship makes an ideal platform for undertaking multifarious missions such as surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation. The special features of the ship include an Integrated Bridge Management System (IBMS), Integrated Machinery Control System (IMCS) and an integrated gun mount with indigenous Fire Control System (FCS). The ship which has been named ICGS “Abhiraj”, literally meaning “Brilliant”, will be based at Tuticorin and will be under administrative and operational control of the Commander, Coast Guard Region (East).

Congress leader K.V. Thomas took over as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Wednesday. He will be the 94th PAC Chairman. Expenditure Management Commission[15/08/2014]

Expenditure Management Commission has been set up by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be headed by former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan.   • China Developed the Fastest Computer of the World Called Tianhe-2
    A survey conducted by Top 500, revealed on 17 June 2013 that the Chinese supercomputer is the fastest computer of the world. This Chinese supercomputer is called Tianhe-2 and it replaced US machine called Titan, which was earlier said to be the fastest computer of the world.
  • India to be most Populous Country by 2028
    The UN report titled World Population Prospects was released on 13 June 2013, forecasted that India will be the most populous country of the world by 2028 leaving behind China. The report also claimed that by 2025 the world population will increase by one billion and reach to 8.1 billion from 7.2 billion at present. By 2050, the world population will be 9.6 billion as per the report.

      Adam Johnson's novel The Orphan Master's son won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2013. Last year, judges had failed to select a winner of the award for fiction for the first time in 35 years. The book carries the reader on an adventuresome journey into the depths of totalitarian North Korea and into the most intimate spaces of the human heart.
      Johnson teaches creative writing at Stanford University. He spent time in North Korea to research his book. Other books in contention were, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, by Nathan Englander and The Snow Child, by Eowyn Ivey.

      Delhi-born Raj Chetty, the professor in the Department of Economy at the Harvard University won John Bates Clark medal for 2013, also called Baby Nobel. Raj Chetty's work was also cited by the US President Barack Obama in State of the Union Address.
      John Bates Clark medal is conferred upon the American economist whose age is below 40 years and the one who has made crucial contribution to economic knowledge and thought. Baby Nobel is one of the most prestigious awards of economy. Infact, it is second only after Nobel Prize in economic science.

India Facts An Overview

        Indian landmass has an area of Over 12, 69,219 sq miles (32, 87,263 sq km) of which 10,861 sq miles are included in seven Union Territories and the rest in the 28 states. It expanses 3214 km north to south, 2933km east to west. As per the geographic location is concerned, India is situated at latitude 8.4'N to 37.9'N and longitudinally between 68.7'E to 97.25'E.
 
There 638365 villages, which consist of 74 per cent of total population.
 
The population stood over 121 million (in 2011), which 16 per cent to world population. Population density of India is 386. Hindus constitute 80.44 per cent; Muslims constitute 13.42 per cent and other 6.14 per cent of total population.
 
Per Capita Annual Income in India is Rs 36003.
 
Getting into literacy, 74.09 per cent populations is literate and has life expectancy of 65.2 years.
 
Every man and women of 18 years and above is an elector for the House of the people and Legislative assembly. During the fifth general elections in 1971, the number of persons on the electoral roll was 190 million, which is more than that of the population of USA or the former USSR. On the revision of the electoral roll, the number mounted up to 361 million and as result of voting age limit to 18 it further increased up to 490 million. In 1996 it was recorded 590 , 2004 it was 675 million and in 2009 was 714 million.
 
General Election have been held in 1952, 1957, 1967, 1971, 1977, 1980, 1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2009.
 
The constituent assembly had its first sitting on 9.12.1946.
 
The draft constitution of India, which was prepared by the drafting committee of the constituent assembly and presented by the president of the constituent assembly on 21.2.1948, contained 315 Articles and 8 Schedules.
 
The constitution of, as adopted on 26.11.1949, contained 395 Articles and 8 Schedules.
Up to December 2010, the constitution amends numbered 95. Amendment procedure refers to Article 368 of the constitution.
