04/02/2010 : What is the Need of SLR?

With the SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio), the RBI can ensure the solvency a commercial bank. It is also helpful to control the expansion of Bank Credits. By changing the SLR rates, RBI can increase or decrease bank credit expansion. Also through SLR, RBI compels the commercial banks to invest in government securities like government bonds..

04/02/2010 : SLR to Control Inflation and propel growth : SLR is used to control inflation and propel growth. Through SLR rate tuning the money supply in the system can be controlled efficiently.

04/02/2010 : Inflation : Inflation is defined as an increase in the price of bunch of Goods and services that projects the Indian economy. An increase in inflation figures occurs when there is an increase in the average level of prices in Goods and services. Inflation happens when there are less Goods and more buyers, this will result in increase in the price of Goods, since there is more demand and less supply of the goods.

04/02/2010 : Deflation : Deflation is the continuous decrease in prices of goods and services. Deflation occurs when the inflation rate becomes negative (below zero) and stays there for a longer period...

04/02/2010 : What are the effects of Deflation : During deflation the price of goods and services is falling and consumers will tend to delay their purchases until prices fall further. This will cause for a lower production, lower wages and demand which will lead to further decrease in prices. This is known as deflationary spiral.

04/02/2010 : What is Deflationary Spiral? : It is a situation when decrease in the prices leads to lower production, lower wages and demand, which can lead to further decrease in the prices. A deflationary spiral is when decrease in prices lead to a vicious circle (a trouble leads to another that aggravates the first).

04/02/2010 : CRR Rate in India : Cash reserve Ratio (CRR) is the amount of funds that the banks have to keep with RBI. If RBI decides to increase the percent of this, the available amount with the banks comes down. RBI is using this method (increase of CRR rate), to drain out the excessive money from the banks. Ex. If bank A have assets of Rs 100 crore and CRR is 6%, then bank A will have to give RBI Rs 6 crore.

04/02/2010 : Repo Rate : Whenever the banks have any shortage of funds they can borrow it from RBI. Repo rate is the rate at which our banks bor.row rupees from RBI. A reduction in the repo rate will help banks to get money at a cheaper rate. When the repo rate increases borrowing from RBI becomes more expensive. Ex. If Repo Rate is 3%, and bank A borrows Rs 100 crore from RBI, bank A will have to pay an interest of Rs 3 crore to RBI.

04/02/2010 : Reverse Repo Rate : Reverse Repo rate is the rate at which Reserve Bank of India (RBI) borrows money from banks. Banks are always happy to lend money to RBI since their money are in safe hands with a good interest. An increase in Reverse repo rate can cause the banks to transfer more funds to RBI due to this attractive interest rates. It can cause the money to be drawn out of the banking system. Ex. If bank A lends Rs 100 crore to RBI and RRR is 4%, RBI will pay bank A an interest of Rs 4 crore.

04/02/2010 : SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio) is the amount a commercial bank needs to maintain in the form of cash, or gold or govt. approved securities (Bonds) before providing credit to its customers. SLR rate is determined and maintained by the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) in order to control the expansion of bank credit. Ex. If SLR is 8% and bank A have total cash and gold of Rs 100 crore, then bank A can lend or spend only Rs 92 crore and will have to save Rs 8 crore.

29/01/2010 : The nebula, from which our Solarsystem is supposed to have been formed, started its collapse and core formation some time 5-5.6 billion years ago and the planets were formed about 4.6 billion years ago. Our solar system consists of the sun (the star), 9 planets, 63 moons, millions of smaller bodies like asteroids and comets and huge quantity of dust-grains and gases.

29/01/2010 : Formation of Planets: The following are considered to be the stages in the development of planets: (i) The stars are localised lumps of gas within a nebula. The gravitational force within the lumps leads to the formation of a core to the gas cloud and a huge rotating disc of gas and dust develops around the gas core. (ii) In the next stage, the gas cloud starts getting condensed and the matter around the core develops into small rounded objects. These small-rounded objects by the process of cohesion develop into what is called planetesimals. Larger bodies start forming by collision, and gravitational attraction causes the material to stick together. Planetesimals are a large number of smaller bodies. (iii) In the final stage, these large number of small planetesimals accrete to form a fewer large bodies in the form of planets.

29/01/2010 : The mean distance between the sun and the earth is 149,598,000 km. In terms of light years, it is 8.311 minutes of a year.

29/01/2010 : A galaxy starts to form by accumulation of hydrogen gas in the form of a very large cloud called nebula. Eventually, growing nebula develops localised clumps of gas. These clumps continue to grow into even denser gaseous bodies, giving rise to formation of stars. The formation of stars is believed to have taken place some 5-6 billion years ago.

29/01/2010 : The Big Bang Theory considers the following stages in the development of the universe. (i) In the beginning, all matter forming the universe existed in one place in the form of a "tiny ball" (singular atom) with an unimaginably small volume, infinite temperature and infinite density. (ii) At the Big Bang the "tiny ball" exploded violently. This led to a huge expansion. It is now generally accepted that the event of big bang took place 13.7 billion years before the present. The expansion continues even to the present day. As it grew, some energy was converted into matter. There was particularly rapid expansion within fractions of a second after the bang. Thereafter, the expansion has slowed down. Within first three minutes from the Big Bang event, the first atom began to form. (iii) Within 300,000 years from the Big Bang, temperature dropped to 4,500 K and gave rise to atomic matter. The universe became transparent.

28/01/2010 : All about Telanga Telangana is a region comprising 10 of Andhra Pradesh?s 23 districts. Originally, it was a part of the erstwhile Nizam?s princely state of Hyderabad. The region accounts for 119 seats of 294 in the assembly. In 1948, India put an end to the rule of the Nizams and a Hyderabad state was formed. In 1956, the Telangana part of Hyderabad was merged with then Andhra state (carved out of Madras Presidency in October, 1953). The remaining parts of the Nizam?s empire merged with Karnataka and Maharashtra. Andhra Pradesh became the first linguistically carved state in the country after Gandhian revolutionary Potti Sreeramulu, on a hunger strike over the issue, died on December 16, 1952. The first Telangana movement intensified in 1969. There was a distinct difference between Andhra and Telangana regions. Since Andhra was part of a colonial Madras Presidency, education levels and development of this region were better than in feudal Telangana. People from Telangana were against merger with Andhra state as they feared they would lose jobs to them. Cultural differences, too, remain. Under Nizam?s, and before that, under the Qutb Shahi rule, the culture and langauge in Telangana bore influences of north India. Emphasis on festivals are also different. Primarily a student-driven protest, it turned historical for the number of people who took part in it. Over 350 students were killed in police firing and lathi charge. Osmania University was the movement?s hotbed. Congress leader Marri Channa Reddy, who raised the ?Jai Telangana? slogan, diluted the movement by merging his Telangana Praja Samithi Party with Congress ? Indira Gandhi made him the chief minister after this. That?s how the movement collapsed: a result of Indira Gandhi?s masterstroke. P V Narasimha Rao, too, was made CM in 1971 because he was from Telangana region. In the 90s, KCR, then a member of the Telugu Desam Party, was hopeful of a ministerial post in the state government but was made deputy speaker after the 1999 elections. He quit TDP in 2001 to champion the cause of a separate Telangana state and founded Telangana Rashtra Samithi. All this while, with faster development in the rest of Andhra, a strong feeling was gaining ground in Telangana that it was being exploited and that the region?s surplus was being transferred to finance development in the rest of the state. In 2004 election, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy joined hands with KCR, promising a separate Telangana. But YSR got cold feet and backtracked, triggering resignations of TRS MLAs. KCR quit his Union ministry post. Congress continues to flip-flop, while TDP, which was against separate Telangana until 2009 election, is now supporting it. BJP, CPI and PRP support Telangana. CPM?s stand still unclear, but by and large, it is opposed to Telangana. Hyderabad, which is within the Telangana region, is a bone of contention between votaries of Telangana and those against it. The issue of AP capital remains a stumbling block in the creation of Telangana.
