09/02/2010 : A Bill to give legal cover for construction, operation and maintenance of the metro rail system in the National Capital Region (NCR) and other metro cities was passed by the Lok Sabha today (06.08.2009). The Metro Railways (Amendment) Bill 2009, which was introduced by Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy, was necessary as currently there were no statutory provisions to provide legal backing to the development, construction, operation and maintenance of metro rail system outside Delhi. It will enable Delhi Metro to enter Noida and pave way for its expansion to other parts of NCR. Therefore, it has become necessary to make suitable amendments in the Metro Railways (Construction of Works) Act 1978 and the Delhi Metro Railway (Operation and Maintenance) Act 2002 so as to make the provisions of both these Acts applicable to the metro railways in the NCR, metropolitan cities and other areas for development, construction, operation and maintenance of metro railways.



These bills are not being made applicable to metro operations in Kolkata as it was being regulated through the Calcutta Metro Railway (Operation and Maintenance) Temporary Provisions Act 1985. Kolkata was the first city in India to begin metro rail service.

09/02/2010 : Sanskrit poet Satya Vrat Shastri was conferred the prestigious Jnanpith Award for 2006 for his contributions to literature and enrichment of the language. The Award was presented to him by his disciple and Princess of Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on 19th August 2009.



Shastri has to his credit three Mahakavyas of about a thousands stanzas each, three Khandakavyas, one Prabandhakavya and one Patrakavya.



The Award carries a citation and a prize money of Rs seven lakh.



Shastri became the first Sanskrit poet to be conferred the award since its inception in 1965.



The 42nd Jnanpith Award (2006) was jointly won by Staya Vrat Shastri and the noted Konkani writer Rajendra Kelekar. Incidentally, Kelekar is also the first writer to get an Jnanpith Award in his language.
